People are bad at understanding probabilities, so if you have say a 90% probability of a particular outcome, it can be infuriating when we miss because 90% "feels" like it's effectively a guarantee. I remember seeing a video about randomness in games which included snippets of an interview with the Into the Breach devs, and they made an interesting point. Maybe there's something more fun they could replace it with? Dunno. IMO, the real question is whether it's good to have grid defense as a pilot skill. You'd be able to basically ignore the vek entirely, trivializing the strategy of the game. And that's not to mention what would happen if grid defense were high enough to be actually good. From a game design standpoint, its better to have obviously weak grid defense than misleading grid defense that looks good but is still a trap. Because there is no way to control when grid defense will trigger, the optimal play is always to pretend that grid defense doesn't exist. However, grid defense has to be weak because there's no way to plan around grid defense, and because strong grid defense would lead to uninteresting gameplay. With grid defense, you can at least hope grid defense will save you. It would feel awful if you couldn't deal with all the threats and you knew that pressing the turn end button would result in guaranteed loss.
